From a Fan’s Heart: The Story of WMRTS

Hi, I go by Molix, and first and foremost, I’m a die-hard fan of Total Annihilation.

My adventure began way back in 1997. I was just a kid spending countless hours creating custom mods and maps, only to dive into long skirmishes against the AI or challenge my friends at memorable LAN parties hosted at my place. That spirit, that passion, has never left me.

The Spark: From TA to the Spring Engine

As I grew up, I always dreamed of a TA remake something that could bring back that magic with a more modern look. My search ended in 2008 when I discovered the Spring Engine. Although it was still in its early days, I immediately realized I wasn’t alone. There was an entire community of enthusiasts who, like me, were working to keep the spirit of TA alive with incredible projects like Balanced AnnihilationXTAComplete Annihilation, and many more.

In 2011, driven by this excitement, I decided to bring my own project to life: War Machines RTS.

My Vision: Fidelity and Modernity

My goal was clear: to refresh the graphics of TA’s units while preserving their “low-poly” soul and original style. For me, TA has to remain old-style—a faithful tribute with a modern touch, not a radical transformation.

I started by selecting units from the legendary tauniverse.com and integrating my favorite mods from back in the day. I wanted to create “my” game, a custom version that blended classic gameplay with an improved aesthetic, while always respecting the original.

A Solo Journey (With a Few Bumps in the Road)

As the sole developer, it’s been a long road. By 2018, I had finally finished 3D modeling most of the units. It was time for the next step: creating a custom launcher for WMRTS to move beyond the old “SpringLobby” and offer a more integrated experience.

In 2019, with the ambition of also improving the maps and getting a dedicated server, I tried my luck with Kickstarter. Although the campaign didn’t reach its goal—perhaps due to my inexperience in asking for the right amount of support—I didn’t give up. Over time and with patience, I eventually managed to get the tools I needed to keep going.

War Machines RTS Today: A Pure Passion Project

Today, after a hiatus for personal reasons, I’m excited to release one of the most significant updates in the history of WMRTS. It includes almost entirely remade maps, two new factions, single-player missions, and campaigns.

War Machines RTS has no commercial goals. It’s my personal project, my creative sandbox that I develop in my free time. It’s our way of reliving those 1997 evenings, with the difference that today the graphics are a bit better, and we drink beer while we play. 🙂
